“North African, Berber, one Of the race dwelling in Barbary,” late 14c., from Old French More, from Medieval Latin Morus, from Latin Maurus “inhabitant of Mauretania” (Roman northwest Africa, a region now corresponding to northern Algeria and Morocco), from Greek Mauros, perhaps a native name, or else cognate with mauros “black” (but this adjective appears in late Greek and may as well be from the people’s name).
Also applied to the Arabic conquerors of Spain. Being a dark people in relation to Europeans, their name in the Middle Ages was a synonym for “Negro;” later (IGc.-17c.), being the name of the nearest Muslims to Western Europe, it was used indiscriminately of Muslims (Persians, Arabs, etc.) but especially those in India. “Moor” were colonized, reclassified and branded during slavery as Indians, Negroes, Black People, Colored Folks, African American, Jamaican, Trinidadian, Barbadian, etc, etc…
These name were given to slaves by slave holders in 1779 in order to control and steal the birthright(s) of the indigenous people. On January 15, 1865, slavery was abolished in the United States with the congressional ratification of the 13th Amendment. As a result Moorish (American) people were emancipated from slavery.
Noble Drew Ali, A Moor – descendant of our Ancient Moabites. He was born of the Cherokee Tribe of the Moorish Nation, and was named Timothy Drew. At a very young age, Timothy Drew was inspired to learn more about the scattered bits and pieces of the heritage, knowledge and culture of his Ancient Moorish peoples. He began to travel the land of old (Amexem, Africa / America). He lived and mingled with various Indigenous Moorish tribes; and was resolved to better their conditions.
Noble Drew Ali’s inspired activity and determination were the impetus yet to be manifested Moorish movement. He founded the Moorish Science Temple of America and the Moorish Divine National Movement of World to Uplift the Moors and fallen humanity. If one would wonder or desire to have a clearer knowledge, understanding of focus and purpose about the Moorish Divine and National Movement in North America – then study the words of the Prophet and founder of the Moorish Movement. Charles Mosley Bey, was a highly qualified 3rd, 33rd, and 360 degree, Free Moorish Master Mason, Master Astrologer, PhD., LLD., and Constitution Law – Giver. Charles Mosley Bey penned other works as well under the Certificate Registration Number AA77869 March, 23 1948, and Certificate Registration number AA209316 March 31, 1952.Washington D.C.. He made the Provision for Moors to correct their status.
